Buffalo’s Japanese Sister City in Japan Sends students for week-long tour

BUFFALO -- Mayor Byron W. Brown today welcomes the Kanazawa Junior Jazz Orchestra for a lunchtime concert in the lobby of City Hall. The Jazz ensemble is being hosted by the Hamburg High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Larry Dubill, for a visit from July 31st to August 6th, 2006.

They will meet Mayor Brown today in his office at 11 AM and give a lunchtime performance in City Hall’s Grand Lobby.

A full week of activities, concerts and clinics is scheduled for the week.  Last year, the Hamburg High School Jazz Ensemble traveled to Japan for an 11-day tour.  They visited several cities and performed at schools and at festivals in Kanazawa. Highlights for the Japan visitors include a free public concert on Thursday, August 3rd, at 7:30pm at the Hamburg Village Memorial Park on Union St. in Hamburg. (Rain location: Hamburg High School Auditorium, Legion Dr.)  Both the Kanazawa and Hamburg Jazz Ensembles will perform.

The "Dave Schiavone Quartet" will be giving a concert/clinic for the students on Friday at Hamburg High School.

The Japanese Ensemble, made up of students from ages 12 - 20, will also have the opportunity to visit Niagara Falls and Six Flags Darien Lake.  The community of Hamburg has been very supportive in helping to make the tour happen.  The Hamburg Band leader, Larry Dubill, has been very active in promoting cross-cultural activities with Japan.  He lived in Japan in 1992-93 and studied music with famed marimba artist Keiko Abe.  He invited the Kanazawa Junior Jazz Orchestra following the Hamburg High School Jazz Ensemble's tour to Japan in June, 2005.
