Awarded $10,000 for Local Community Endeavor

SHENANDOAH, Pa., November 2, 2006 – The search for the city with the most passion for pierogies – the perfect pairing of pasta and potatoes – ended today in Western New York. The city of Buffalo, N.Y. was named the first-ever Capital of the Pierogy Pocket, by Mrs. T’s® Pierogies.

Along with the title of Capital of the Pierogy Pocket, Buffalo received a $10,000 award from Mrs. T’s Pierogies to use toward a local community endeavor of their choice. The city will be using this money to support several city programs, including cultural heritage projects, tourism opportunities, Police Athletic League endeavors and Sister Cities projects.

The Pierogy Pocket is an area of the country in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest where pierogy consumption is higher than anywhere else in the nation. It spans cities and towns throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and includes parts of New York, southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic region.
Buffalo showed its passion for pierogies by declaring August 25, 2006 “Pierogy Pride Day.” Mayor Byron Brown was on site to issue the proclamation and participate in festivities, which included a pierogy cook-off and a pierogy toss. The city also compiled footage from the event and produced a video set to an original song entitled “Pierogy Pride – Buffalo’s Anthem.”

“Buffalo has a large eastern European population that takes a great deal of pride in their heritage and food,” said Mayor Brown. “We are both pleased and privileged to be selected for this honor.”

“Buffalo is a city that loves pierogies and showed it by demonstrating its ‘pierogy pride’” said Tom Twardzik, president of Mrs. T’s Pierogies. “The city’s passion for this unique food and its citizens’ commitment to winning this honor earned them the title of Capital of the Pierogy Pocket.”

Mrs. T’s Pierogies launched the search for the Capital of the Pierogy Pocket, inviting cities in the region to compete for the title by providing a demonstration of their citizens’ “pierogy pride.” Honorable mentions were awarded to Garfield, N.J.; Lancaster, Pa.; Pittsburgh; and Providence, R.I.

The five finalist cities that competed for the title of Capital of the Pierogy Pocket were judged on the materials they submitted to demonstrate their “pierogy pride,” as well as the number of online votes received by people across the country that voted for the city they wanted to see crowned with the title.
