Mayor donates first box of holiday food

BUFFALO—With the Thanksgiving holiday just a few weeks away and following the October Surprise storm, Mayor Byron Brown today urged all city residents to make donations to the Food Bank of Western New York.

“The Food Bank was a great partner during the October Surprise storm,” said Mayor Brown. “Unfortunately, it depleted the organization’s stock of food. I urge local companies, food manufacturers or distributors and individuals to join me in helping the Food Bank this holiday season. The Food Bank needs turkeys and all the fixings, such as cans of vegetables, yams, cranberries and stuffing for a Thanksgiving dinner for the families it serves.”

The Mayor handed over the first box of food, which contained staples and holiday items as well. Collection barrels will also be placed in the City Hall Grand Lobby during the holiday season.

“We are extremely appreciative of Mayor Byron Brown and his staff’s donation of food to officially begin our Thanksgiving Holiday Drive at the Food Bank of WNY.  The challenge this year is much greater than before because of the demand for food during the surprise October storm,” said Clem Eckert, President and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY.  “However, we are confident our city of good neighbors will rise to the occasion again to help the needy in our community.”

Food items can be donated at Food Bank Headquarters at 91 Holt St., from
7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Those interested in donating can go to www.foodbankwny.org for more information and directions to the Food Bank.
