Annual Inspection Signals Preparation for Winter Weather

BUFFALO - Mayor Byron W. Brown today, joined by city Public Works Commissioner Joseph Giambra and Henry Jackson, Director of Street Cleaning and Snow Removal, conducted the annual inspection of Buffalo's snow fighting fleet at the Department of Public Works Broadway Garage.

"We've already seen what the city crews and equipment are capable of during the October Surprise Storm," said Mayor Brown. "But that was an emergency situation that required quick action.  At that time, the equipment and crews, while doing an excellent job, were still working on leaf and refuse removal across the city.  Since then, the snow fighting equipment has been reassessed and thoroughly prepared for the coming winter season."

The city snow fighting equipment includes the following 57 pieces of equipment:

40 plows
10 hi-lifts
5 v-plows
2 snow blowers

In addition, the Department has 5 plows ordered that they hope to receive by mid-January and the proposed Capital Budget contains funds for 4 new hi-lifts.

"The men and women of our Department showed their skill and experience during the October Surprise Storm," stated Commissioner Giambra.  "I have complete confidence in their abilities and our equipment is ready for winter."
