The stakes were raised today on the NHL's Eastern Conference championship that pits the Buffalo Sabres against the Carolina Hurricanes. In addition to a shot at hockey's Holy Grail – the Stanley Cup – the victor's spoils will include either Buffalo wings or Carolina barbecue.

The deal is Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown will send Buffalo wings soaring south if the 'Canes prevail and lay claim to the Prince of Wales Cup. Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker will send three pounds of Carolina's culinary delight to Buffalo if the Sabres advance to the Stanley Cup finals.

"The Buffalo Sabres have proved repeatedly throughout the regular season and the Stanley Cup playoffs that they are among the elite teams in the NHL," said Mayor Brown. "Having defeated Philadelphia and Ottawa, our hometown heroes are setting their sights on the Carolina Hurricanes. I look forward to their ultimate victory as they continue their quest toward winning the Stanley Cup and I especially look forward to receiving Mayor Meeker's delicious Carolina barbeque."

Mayor Byron Brown made the wager today during a live noon telephone conversation with Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker.  Mayor Meeker chided Mayor Brown that the bet was "merely a formality, given the certainly of the 'Canes being triumphant over the Sabres" in the best-of-seven series that beings Saturday at 2 p.m. at the RBC Center in Raleigh.

The two mayors also agreed to sport the other's jersey in the case of defeat. If the 'Canes take the series, Mayor Brown will begin a City of Buffalo meeting decked out in a Carolina jersey. If the opposite occurs, Mayor Meeker will start a Raleigh council meeting garbed in a Sabres jersey.
