Shea’s Performing Arts Center, a stunning Tiffany-designed opera house in the heart of downtown, anchors Buffalo’s theater community with its annual Broadway series. On the same block, you’ll find moving dramas and new works by up-and-coming playwrights at the Irish Classical Theatre Company, Road Less Traveled Productions and the Alleyway Theatre. The Ujima Theatre and the Paul Robeson Theatre both feature plays by African-Americans and people of color, and the beautifully-restored Allendale Theatre, in the historic Allentown neighborhood, is home to the Theatre of Youth, featuring musicals, comedies and dramas for families. You can find the Grammy Award-winning Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Buffalo Chamber Music Society at Kleinhans Music Hall. Designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Kleinhans is a building of both acoustic and architectural perfection. And Buffalo’s music scene goes well beyond classical. Hear avant-garde music at Soundlab, jam bands at Nietzsche’s, roots rock at the Sportsmen’s Tavern, jazz at Allen Street Hardware, indie rock at Mohawk Place and everything from hip-hop to alt.country at the Town Ballroom. |
