BUFFALO – Mayor Byron Brown joined the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy and community leaders this week to announce $12.6 million has been raised to date for maintenance and restoration of Buffalo's landmark urban parks, designed by the renowned American landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. "The Buffalo Olmsted Parks have been a driving force in economic redevelopment and neighborhood revitalization throughout the city, and the fact that the Conservancy reached its goal for Phase 1 is a testament to the organization's hard work and commitment to this important parks system," said Mayor Brown. "This underscores the skill and ability of the dedicated staff and volunteers, not to mention all of those who contributed, to ensure that our parks remain the natural jewels of the City of Buffalo." The money raised in Phase 1 came from private citizens, corporations, government agencies and community and neighborhood organizations. Part of the money will fund a 20-year parks and restoration plan, as well as routine maintenance and landscaping. As a New York State Senator, Mayor Brown gave over $8,000 to the parks through his Crime Prevention Program. The Phase 1 capital improvements in all six Olmsted-designed parks include: newly constructed pedestrian pathways that are true to the original Olmsted design, landscape enhancements and restoration of the shelter house in Cazenovia Park. The six Olmsted-designed parks are: Delaware Park, Riverside Park, Front Park, Cazenovia Park, Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and South Park. "I look forward to celebrating the successful completion of Phase 2 as the City of Buffalo and the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy work together to not only honor, but preserve the work and enhance the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted," said Mayor Brown. "I am hopeful that the residents of this city will continue to be generous for this very worthy effort." |
