Mayor Brown Resumes Annual Summer Police Foot and Bicycle Patrols
May 23, 2013 - Patrols will focus on commercial districts, parks and residential neighborhoods "Foot and Bike Patrol Units benefit the community by providing a visible presence in commercial districts, residential neighborhoods and in parks and playgrounds,” said Mayor Brown. “By putting dedicated police patrols on the street and updating our bicycle patrols, we continue to further strengthen our highly effective zero tolerance anti-crime policy that has resulted in a nearly 20% drop in overall crime since 2006.” The foot and bicycle patrols will focus on the city's commercial districts, adjoining residential neighborhoods and parks. Currently, BPD detail cars in every District are mandated to perform "park and walk" patrols on every shift. The foot and bike patrols will complement these ongoing activities. Mayor Brown Announces $8.1 Million in Proposed Capital Improvements to Citywide Community Centers
Mayor Byron Brown joined representatives from more than a dozen community centers from across the city at the JFK Community Center this morning to announce $8.1 million in proposed capital improvements to facilities. The JFK Community Center is on the list of proposed recipients. “Our neighborhoods are among our greatest assets and our community centers are invaluable resources that serve the needs of city residents through effective outreach and programming for people of all ages,” said Mayor Brown. “These funds will be distributed in such a way that we will make each dollar go as far as it can, improving the quality of life for our residents. Investing in these facilities makes sense, offering a safe and updated outlet for young people, while improving the sites and programs to enhance the experience for all city residents, including our senior citizens.” The proposed investment, from several funding sources, will be used to make capital improvements at many of the community centers that offer programs that lift up and assist senior citizens, low-income families, and those who need additional tutoring, job training or health services.The recipients of the proposed funding, totaling nearly $8.1 million, include: Read More... Mayor Brown Kicks Off Phase-One Broderick Park Revitalization Project With A Ceremonial Groundbreaking
Mayor Byron Brown was joined today by Niagara District Councilman David Rivera, members of the Buffalo Quarters Historical Society, Buffalo United Front, Western New York Anglers Association, the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, the New York Department of State, Rich Products, the Broderick Park Advisory Committee and other community leaders and stakeholders for a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the start of construction for the $1.5 million Phase I Broderick Park Revitalization Project. The $1.5 million phase-one construction plan calls for new shelter and grills, south parking area and roadway improvements, an amphitheater, new entrance plaza, canal side railings, a great lawn, utilities and lighting. “I am proud to celebrate the rebirth of Broderick Park, one of Buffalo’s crown jewels,” said Mayor Brown. “Today is a milestone in a community wide effort to revitalize and improve one of the city’s and nation’s historic sites - Broderick Park. I want to thank our partners for being a part of this effort that will guarantee Broderick Park will once again be a shining source of pride, and create a a space that is not only a regional draw to Buffalo’s waterfront, but celebrates the historic value of the park.” Broderick Park, located at the foot of West Ferry Street along the Niagara River, is listed as part of the National Underground Railroad Network and recognized by historians as the historic terminus of the Underground Railroad between the United States and Canada. Mayor Brown Welcomes IBM Smarter Cities Challenge Team To Buffalo
Mayor Byron Brown, joined by City officials and community stakeholders, today welcomed a senior global team of IBM executives to Buffalo as they kicked off a three-week, pro bono consulting visit, funded by an IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant. “I am delighted to welcome this impressive team of IBM employees to Buffalo,” said Mayor Brown during this morning’s news conference at historic Buffalo City Hall. “IBM recognizes the remarkable progress and transformation that’s underway in Buffalo, where more than $1.7 billion in economic development activity is currently in the works. The Smarter Cities Challenge Grant will significantly assist our ability to build on the progress, finding new ways to use technology to create and further expand youth employment opportunities in our city, resulting in a smarter, stronger Buffalo.” The five member team of experts (biographies attached) will work with the City of Buffalo and other stakeholders to craft new strategies for utilizing data to develop, enhance and facilitate employment opportunities for young adults in Buffalo. Launched in 2011, the IBM Smarter Cities Challenge is a three-year, 100-city, $50 million competitive grant program. The program, which is IBM's single-largest philanthropic initiative, assigns a team of top IBM experts to each winning city to study a key issue identified by the City's leadership. May 1, 2013 - $482.5 million spending plan provides residential property tax certainty, a business tax cut, and does not raise any fees, including the garbage user fee; it also provides numerous quality of life increases, continuing the progress in Buffalo Mayor Brown’s proposed budget is $482,534,741, lower than last year’s budget. “This budget reflects my continued commitment to sound fiscal management and conservative budgeting, which paid off this year with increased investment and economic development activity in Buffalo,” said Mayor Brown.
